Mid-Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Petrin Dough Box from Provence
$4,200
About
This antique fruit wood dough box was created in Provence, France circa 1950. Heavily carved from top to bottom, the “Petrin Provencal” (French for dough-box) sits on four turned legs ending with escargot feet and acanthus leaf motifs. The cabinet features exquisite Provencal floral carvings including a basket of flowers, foliage, music instruments on the scalloped apron, and the traditional vase with wheat decor on the bottom plinth. The center panel pulls down held with small chains, and reveals a writing surface with wonderful inside storage. The cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina. Originally, the “Petrin” was used to make bread dough, then the bread was stored in a “Panetiere” (French for bread cabinet), which was usually hung over the dough box. Measure: 44.5″ W x 19″ D x 41.5″ H.
