A quiet autumn day unfolds in this atmospheric antique oil painting of rural French life. Crafted in France circa 1890, the work is presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame and signed “E. Lefevre” in the lower left corner, one of the pseudonyms used by French painter Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941).

The composition depicts a rain-washed village road bordered by modest cottages and autumn foliage. A peasant woman carrying a basket occupies the foreground, while additional figures and a horse-drawn cart recede toward the distant church tower. Reflections across the damp roadway, a softly illuminated horizon, and touches of golden yellow enliven the otherwise muted palette. Galien-Laloue’s loose, expressive brushwork and careful handling of light lend the scene both depth and a contemplative sense of everyday provincial life.

The canvas has been relined and reinforced with a wooden support panel for stability. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription identifying “E. Galien-Laloue 1854–1941” and “E. Lefevre.” The painting has been authenticated by French art expert Noé Willer and is recorded in his archives devoted to the artist. Galien-Laloue, who is listed in Bénézit, is particularly recognized for his atmospheric views of Belle Époque Paris and the French countryside.

The painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with richly preserved color and light surface wear to the giltwood frame.
