19th Century French Black Forest Carved Walnut Corner Shelf with Chamois Head
$1,300
About
This beautifully antique wall bracket was carved in the Alps Mountains of France, circa 1870. Half circle in shape, the fruitwood corner shelf console features fine hand carved nature motifs including a caprinae head figure with glass eyes (or goat, antelope), foliage and tree branches. The small corbel console is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina; use it in a ranch house or hunting lodge to hold a vase, a candlestick or a sculpture! The Caprinae is one of the most successful bovid subfamilies, with 35 currently recognized species found in mountainous regions across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Their success is due to a generalized form with specializations for montane habitats, a combination which confers flexibility within the alpine biome. The Caprinae tend to be medium-sized ungulates, with a compact form, thick legs, a sure-footed nature, and tolerance of extremes in temperature which occur in mountainous environments. Measures: 11″ W x 9.5″ D x 14.5″ H.
