19th Century French Carved Giltwood Virgin Mary Statue on Globe from Provence
$4,600
About
Over three feet tall, this important antique sculpture of the Virgin Mary in prayers was created in Provence, France, circa 1860. Embellished with gold leaf and polychrome finish, the large religious figure is beautifully ornate and has wonderful details throughout her robe, face, hair and hands. The Madonna carving is depicted standing on a blue painted globe, crushing a snake under her foot. This means not only she is our Mother in heaven but she is the Queen of the Earth and the entire universe. The serpent represents Satan who tries to hurt men and take them to Hell. The Virgin Mary is much more powerful than Satan and easily crushed. Also as referenced in the book of Genesis (3:15); I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed: he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel”. “I have given you power to tread on serpents and the power of the enemy” we read in the Gospel of Luke 10. 19. Since Adam and Eve, the snake represents temptation and evil. The Virgin, crushing the serpent in triumph. The tall religious sculpture is in excellent condition with a rich and beautiful gold leaf finish. Measures: 20″ W x 13″ D x 39.5″ H.
