About
Decorate an office of a study with this elegant statue of Joan of Arc, the iconic French heroine and saint. Crafted in France circa 1870, the antique figure sits on a rectangular base, and depicts Sainte Jeanne d’ Arc in armor suit, in a dynamic equestrian pose, waving the victory flag after the battle of Orleans. Made of spelter, the statue captures the valor and determination of Joan, holding her banner aloft with engraved Fleurs de Lys and the words “Jesus Marie”. The piece reflects the 19th-century Romanticism that celebrated national heroes and historical figures. Joan of Arc’s portrayal during this period became a symbol of courage and patriotism, resonating deeply in the cultural consciousness of France and inspiring countless artistic representations like this one. The sculpture is attributed to Ch. Perron, and features wonderful details including a glove and sword lying on the rocky ground. The large figure is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated bronze finish; use it to decorate a shelf in a study or library! Joan of Arc (c. 1412–1431) was a young girl who became a national heroine of France and a saint in the Catholic Church. Born around 1412 in Domrémy, France, rose from humble origins to become a pivotal figure in the Hundred Years’ War. Claiming divine visions from saints and the archangel Michael, she convinced Charles VII to let her lead French forces against English domination. At just 17, Joan’s leadership was instrumental in lifting the Siege of Orléans in 1429 and securing a crucial victory at Patay, leading to Charles’s coronation as King of France. However, her fortunes waned after failed sieges, and she was captured by Burgundian allies of the English in 1430. Tried for heresy, she was executed by burning at the stake in 1431. A retrial in 1456 cleared her name, and she was canonized as a saint in 1920. Joan remains a powerful symbol of French nationalism, martyrdom, and courage, celebrated in numerous cultural works as an enduring icon of faith and independence. Measures: 10″ W x 4.5″ D x 15″ H.
