19th Century Sheep Oil Painting on Board in Carved Gilt Frame Signed Ch. Warland
$3,900
About
Decorate an office or study with this large antique sheep painting. Hand painted on board in Belgium circa 1890, and set in the original thick hand carved giltwood frame, the artwork is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, Charles Warland. The subject matter depicts a beautiful landscape scene with shepherd and his dog attending his flock in a pasture. The decorative painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with great details, including trees and almost two dozen sheep. Charles Warland (1856-1921) was an artist born in Belgium. Warland often painted atmospheric landscapes of this type and he was undoubtedly influenced by his teacher at the Brussels Fine Art Academy, Willem Roelofs (1822–1897). Roelofs was a member of the ‘Hague School’ of artists who believed in working outside and painting how they felt rather than simply what they saw. Later in Warland’s career, he exhibited at the prestigious Exposition Generale des Beaux-Art and he remains a popular artist for collectors of impressionism. Warland died in 1921. 38″W x 29″H
