About
Add color to a tabletop, mantel or shelf with this colorful, antique Majolica well sculpture. The intricate barbotine piece was sculpted in France, circa 1930, and features a well with a bucket and a barrel surrounded with six birds, including two perched at the top, and one on the ground. The hand painted, bucolic scene has a soft pastel color palette that extends from the songbirds to the stones of the well. This ceramic piece is in excellent condition and is attributed to Jerome Massier. Stamped on the underside for further authentication. The Massier family was a dynasty of ceramicists dating back to before the French Revolution. Massier, a French art pottery, was started by brothers Jerome (1820-1909) and Jacques (1806-1871) in Vallauris and Golfe-Juan, France. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the company was then run by their sons Delphin (1836-1907), Clement (1844-1917) and Jerome Fils (1850-1916). Some pieces have an iridescent metallic luster glaze that resembles the Weller Sicardo pottery glaze. Most pieces are marked J. Massier. Massier did not become popular with American collectors until the 1970s and it has been gaining in value ever since. 5″W x 6″D x 10″H
