Mid-19th Century English Iron and Copper Hanging Trade Spring Balance

A one of a kind! Created in England circa 1850, this “Peson” (or spring balance scale) was used in butcher shops to weight animals ( pigs, sheep, veal, etc.). Made of wrought iron and copper, the scientific instrument with double hooks for hanging purpose, could hold up to 250 pounds of meat. The piece features the following words stamped on the front: “Trade Spring Balance, W & T Avery LTD, Birmingham”. The scale is in excellent working condition, commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated finish. Measures: 13″ Diameter 30″ Height.
