Pair of 19th Century French Baroque Bronze Andirons with Lion & Woman Figures
$2,950
About
Decorate a fireplace hearth with this intricate pair of antique chenets. Crafted in France circa 1860, and built of bronze, each ornate andiron features heavy detailing, including a prominent lion head surrounded by scrolling and foliage motifs, representing strength and nobility—a common feature in classical European designs. On either side of the lion’s head, there are highly detailed busts of elegant Goddess women, symbolizing deities or allegorical figures, adding a sense of grandeur and historical reference. The upper portion is dressed with a finial shaped stylized flame or urn, supported by a tower-like structure with pierced and openwork decor. The craftsmanship shows a strong influence from the Baroque or Rococo periods, with their love for symmetry, gilding, and ornamental flourishes. The important fireplace essentials are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorn a rich patinated gilt finish. Each andiron is 22 pounds! Measures: 11″ W x 6.5″ D x 27.75″ H.
